Red Flags to Watch for On a Resume - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Red Flags to Watch for On a Resume - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career As an employer, you probably receive hundreds of resumes every day, especially if you are the hiring manager of a well-known brand. However, do you know the red flags to watch out for in these resumes? Below are the most common signs to look for. Job Hopping: If a candidate changes jobs frequently, this should be a red flag for you. Hiring someone is an expensive process. After hiring, you need to invest into the new hire and train him/her in order to become productive. Usually, it takes around six months for a new hire to become effective in his/her job. As an employer, you can only get efficiency from a new hire after six months. However, if a person changes jobs every seven-eight months, then you should watch out this person. Also, try to avoid these types of candidates because changing jobs frequently means lack of commitment, lack of collaboration and being self-centered. Employment Gaps: An employer should watch out the gaps in a candidate’s resume. These gaps may raise a red flag but they also may not be a bad sign. Sometimes employees take career breaks in order to care for their children or elders, spend more time with their families, continue studying or even travel the world. These are all reasonable gaps. As an employer, when you ask a candidate about the gap in his/her resume and get a reasonable answer, then you don’t need to worry. However, if the candidate cannot explain the gap, then this raises questions and worries. Spelling and Grammar Mistakes: Spelling and grammar mistakes on a resume can be a huge warning because this shows that the candidate is not very detail oriented. Also, a resume is one of the places where the candidate presents himself/herself and having mistakes shows that this person doesn’t care much about his/her presentation. Every job requires detail, attention and a good presentation. Therefore, an employer should really watch out for this type of a candidate. Lack of Achievement: A good resume should show evidence of a successfully progressing career. Job responsibilities should increase over time and job descriptions should grow. Therefore, if a candidate cannot show any achievements on his/her resume or shows a decrease of job titles and responsibilities, then, this should raise a red flag. Sometimes, due to unforeseen circumstances, a candidate may choose to take less responsibilities but a smart candidate knows that this raises questions and makes a reasonable explanation.

Personal Branding Interview Brian Clark - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Personal Branding Interview Brian Clark - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today, I spoke with Brian Clark, who is known for his award winning Copyblogger blog.   Brian has some great knowledge in the blogging arena and shares a lot of his secrets and thoughts today in this interview.   He talks about the common mistakes people make when writing and commenting on blog posts, the most important parts of a blog post, his marketing strategy and more. What are the top three biggest mistakes youve seen people make when writing blog posts? What about commenting on your blog? Probably the top 3 mistakes I see are: Content that lacks true and unique value to the reader. Good content with poor headlines. No real model for translating content into a return on investment, whether that be money or some other goal. Comments that drive me crazy are the one’s that demonstrate the commenter didn’t read or didn’t understand the post all too common. Judging by the amount of success youve had blogging, how long do you think it would have taken to achieve that same amount of success without your blog? Why? Honestly, I don’t think I would have achieved the same level of success. I’ve been producing online content for over 10 years, so it’s just my natural approach. Even when I used pay-per-click between 2001-2005 it was still part of a content strategy. But if you put the effort into blogging, you don’t need to pay for traffic AND you’ve got an asset with the site that becomes more valuable as time passes. What are the three most important parts of a blog post a blogger should try and focus on and perfect? Headline Opening Unique Reader Value Many people get 3. Correct and think it’s enough, but then find that very few people consume the content because they never started reading/listening/watching at all of quickly gave up due to a non-compelling opening. What was your marketing strategy to get your first 1,000 RSS readers? Create the most compelling free content possible that served a foundational role for the life of the blog. I call this cornerstone content, others call it flagship or pillar content. This gives you an immediate return in subscribers, but also becomes an anchor in the search engines for the core focus of your site. What is the future for writing copy in 5 years? Will it be blogging still or something new? Blogging is really about content marketingcreating stuff that attracts the audience you’re after. That means it’s really about content management, an whether you’re producing text, audio or video, it needs to be easy to deal with. So in that sense, blogging isn’t going anywhere. Whether or not we continue to call it blogging is another issue. - Brian Clark is a new media writer/producer, entrepreneur, and recovering attorney. A ten-year-veteran of Internet publishing, Clark has racked up millions of dollars in sales thanks to a mix of online educational content and direct response copywriting. He built three successful offline businesses using online marketing techniques before switching to a producer model that involves building, monetizing, and occasionally selling online media properties. His blog Copyblogger has over 50,000 subscribers and is one of the most popular in the world according to Technorati.

Purposeful Productivity

Purposeful Productivity Work matters to your people and they want their work to matter in the world. Finding that alignment enhances fulfillment at work, leading to increased productivity, innovative and creative working, and means employees are more likely to stay in the role. Sounds idealistic? Here’s what Richard Branson has to say about it: “I think if the people who work for a business are proud of the business they work for, they’ll work that much harder, and therefore, I think turning your business into a real force for good is good business sense as well”. Delivering shareholder returns may be a key focus for senior management, but for many workers, they want to see the impact that the organization makes in societal and community terms; this may be as important to them as the profit drive. Employee engagement was traditionally seen as based on good salaries and attractive benefits, but that’s not enough. Lead from the front Wendy Ulrich, a psychologist, educator, and writer outlines what employers need to address: “Leaders are in a great position to articulate the values a company is trying to enact and to shape the story of how today’s work connects with those values. This means sharing stories of how the company is making a difference for good in the lives of real people, including customers, employees, and communities”. A few years ago, PwC found that top talent is much more inclined to work for companies that have a demonstrated commitment to social issues, compared to ones that don’t. For many workers this may be particularly important; in particular, Gen X and Gen Y believe that being able to apply their personal values in their career is meaningful, to the point that 55% will change career paths to integrate their work and personal life. At 10Eighty, we believe that an organizational culture where employees find their personal purpose is aligned with corporate mission and purpose is where you should aim. Employees want that connection, to feel they are part of the larger whole and to feel that their contribution is recognized and valued. This is predicated on an employee-centered approach that enables each person to bring their ‘best self’ to work. Corporate culture Creating such a culture, one which leads to that shared sense of belonging, encourages team members to collaborate, share knowledge and take a proactive and creative attitude towards challenges and problem-solving. Where the organization builds that common purpose based on shared values, it is able to promulgate success as a shared goal. A healthy workplace environment and a belief in meaningful work encourage employees to think creatively and to learn from and listen to each other; where each is respected for their contribution based on a shared commitment to continuously improving performance. In addition, research suggests that having a strong life purpose is good for both physical and mental health. Michael Steger, Associate Professor of Psychology at Colorado State University found three elements employees seek in purposeful work: Does the work have significance and purpose? Does it contribute to finding a broader meaning in life? Does it make a positive contribution to the greater good? Taking ownership Aligning career values with corporate goals means organizations must adjust and focus organizational development initiatives towards engaging with the employee experience and enabling employees to do better work. Where employees take ownership of the organization’s success, they will feel a greater sense of purpose which is a powerful driver of engagement. More than just a job, a meaningful career that energizes and engages allows talented employees to fulfill their potential.
